If you’re keeping track, in a very short time, Avid has released a LOT of very important, game-changing features-features that may well have been held, in the previous upgrade model, for the next major release. It focuses on cloud-based collaboration with a workflow that makes long-distance collaborations amazingly easy while enabling a type of creative interaction that is powerful, efficient, and forward-thinking. 12.5 was just announced and shown at NAMM.12.4 added Audio Track Freeze, Instrument Track Freeze, and Aux Track Freeze (fantastic features for freeing up processing resources).12.3 added Commit Track (a little like track freezing), Drag and Drop MIDI Commit (converts MIDI data to audio simply by dragging MIDI data to an audio track), Track Commit Mix Delivery, Clip Transparency (lets you see the clip under the one you’re dragging so you see the precise alignment of the clip position for an edit), Batch Fades and Fade Improvements (lets you determine preset fades and apply fades to any number of clips at the same time), and Track Bounce (lets you easily render any or all tracks and groups of tracks for archival, stems, or preparing to transfer to another DAW).12.2 added VCA masters, disk cache, advanced metering, gain reduction metering, Avid Access Plan options including new Plug-in Bundle.12.1 added track input monitoring, let you copy fader settings to sends, provided for up to 128 simultaneous audio tracks and 512 instrument tracks, and it let users solo tracks in PFL (pre-fader listen) or AFL (after-fader listen) mode for optimal recording.

Plus, you get every update for one full year from the date of purchase. That’s just like any other DAW upgrade-you own it and it never goes away.

  • If you own Pro Tools right now, it’ll cost you $299 ($99 if you own Pro Tools 11) for the upgrade to 12.x (today it would be 12.4).
  • Throw out the word “subscription” for now.
  • There’s a little more to the story but I believe that these two scenarios address the concerns of the majority of existing and potential Pro Tools users. In my effort to keep things very simple, here are a couple of the things I discovered from Jay Reagan, Partner Account Manager | Sales Americas Pro Audio for Avid. So, I went to the source to see if I could just keep asking questions until I got it (watch the linked Skype interviews at the end of this post for an excellent explanation of the entire program). Avid is a pretty smart company and it just didn’t make sense to me that they would do something stupid. The word “subscription” just absolutely twisted the conversation-it freaked everyone out.
